Why is my anxious dog shaking and panting when waking or before bed?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | unspayed | 1 year and 11 months old

Why was my dog shaking and panting this morning when she woke up and before going to sleep? She's normally a very anxious dog and shakes when she's not happy with a situation but now she was acting like this for no reason but. The rest of the day she was okay and now that she's asleep she's not shaking anymore.

Thanks for using PetCoach. Shaking and panting can be signs of anxiety or possibly pain. It may be a storm or change in atmospheric pressure triggered her anxiety. I recommend looking into a product such as Adaptil, a natural pheromone that can help some anxious dogs. If she continues shaking I recommend a vet visit to rule out any pain and discuss her anxiety, in some cases medications can greatly improve quality of life for anxious pets. https://www.adaptil.com/us#redirected https://veterinarypartner.vin.com/default.aspx?pid=19239&id=4953006

Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Panting and shaking can be signs of anxiety (for example if there is a thunderstorm), pain, nausea or difficulty breathing. If you can not identify a source of anxiety for your dog, or the signs continue to worsen they should be seen by a vet as soon as possible to determine what is going on. I hope this helps and am happy to answer any questions you have!
