My cat leaks brown, smelly fluid on my bed. Is it anal glands?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Siamese | Female | spayed | 1 year and 9 months old | 5 lbs

I have a 1 1/2 year old female Siamese:tabby mix. We rescued her from the shelter when she was 4 months. For most of her life she leaks horrible smelling fluid, usually on my bed at night. It happens quite often. We have tried whole earth and canadae foods for stomach sensitivities, but those did not help. What could be causing this? Also I forgot to mention, the fluid has a brown/yellow tint to it.

This sounds like anal sac fluid. It has a nasty fishy odor. The anal sacs are like scent glands and they discharge fluid occasionally. This is normal although most animals do it when they defecate so it’s not on the bedding. Other than having the anal sac surgically removed, which I do not recommend, there is nothing I know of to prevent this. I recommend placing a towel or small blanket on the bed where she lays so you can wash it often and keep your bed clean.
