My kitten was stepped on, breathing funny, and limping. What to do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Male | unneutered | 2 months and 5 days old | 4 lbs

I accidentally stepped on my 8 week old kitten. He is breathing funny and not putting weight on his front right paw. His breathing does not sound like anything is wrong with his lungs but he will not put weight on his front right paw. What should I do?

Ideally, Aries should be physically examined by your veterinarian. If he is breathing normally, not lethargic, has pink gums and is not extremely painful, then you can likely have him examined first thing tomorrow. X-rays of the paw and leg may be indicated to diagnose any fractures. If you can, restrict his activity for the rest of the night. Use a cat carrier if you have one. If he is very painful or if his breathing becomes labored and he is lethargic, then he should be examined tonight at the nearest veterinary ER.
