What causes a dog's swollen shoulder and limping with no injury?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Male | neutered | 11 years and 1 month old | 80 lbs

As I asked earlier - my dog seems to have a swollen l/f shoulder muscle, he is limping when walking, lessens while walking. No injury happened no extreme jumping, etc. He is weight bearing on t - food/water/etc all normal. He was fine earlier in the day and during his walk so don't really know what could have happened. Shoulder is visibly swollen compared to r/f - leg and paw all okay/normal. Thank you

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Rufus. I would recommend that he sees his veterinarian for x-rays for the swollen area of the affected limb. Unfortunately bone cancer is a common cause of swelling in the shoulder area. Hopefully this is not the case and he just sustained a soft tissue injury, but you will need the x-rays to know. In the meantime, keep him quiet to allow that limb to rest and do not give any over-the-counter pain medication as these can be toxic to dogs. I hope this information helps.
