My cat loves sweetcorn. Can my cat safely eat it, and how much?

My adult male cat loves to eat sweetcorn. Is there any harm in giving him some ?

Hello and thank you for reaching out to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Cats can eat corn in small quantities and occasionally. Make sure that he doesn't get to eat the silk part of the corn as it can cause blockage of his intestines. As long as most of his diet consists of a well-balanced cat food, a small amount of corn every now and then is OK and will not harm him. I hope this is helpful!

    That is ok but should be given in moderation and should be just a supplement of her normal diet, not the main source of food (corn is made of carbohydrates mainly). Can a cat eat corn flakes?
Hi, thanks for using Boop by Petco! I am assuming by corn flakes you mean a human breakfast cereal. It is ok if Felix eats some, it won't hurt him and it's not toxic. It just shouldn't be his main source of nutrition, he should be eating 95% of a balance cat food either canned or dry. But like I said as a treat or by accident if he eats a corn flake it shouldn't hurt him. Hope this helps!

I have a kitten who likes to eat popcorn. Will it hurt her?
Plain popcorn is fine for them to eat occasionally, but I would limit it to only a few (3-5)pieces at a time, because cats are designed to mostly eat animal - based food. I would also make sure that it doesn't contain too much salt.

My 2 year old male cat, Spock, loves to eat corn husks! He's indoor exclusively. Is this dangerous for him? Why does he do this?
Many young cats like to chew on plant material like grass and leaves, so this may be why corn husks appeal to him. They are not toxic to cats, but if he eats large amounts I would be concerned about causing a possible intestinal obstruction since they are not easily digestible. I would recommend looking for a safer outlet for Spock's chewing and eating behavior - you could try getting him some cat grass to grow inside (available at many pet stores) or even providing a rawhide strip or dental chew similar to what is used for dogs as some cats enjoy these items also.

My cat eats chicken's food. Do i have to worry?
Hi, thanks for using Boop by Petco! I would try to discourage or prevent him from eating it. Small amounts likely wouldn't be a problem but a lot could cause an upset stomach or a blockage. I would store the chicken feed where he can't get it and when you feed the chickens keep him out. Have a good day!

can i feed my cat cantaloupe?
Cantaloupe is not toxic to cats, and should be safe to give in occasional, small amounts. However, I would not recommend giving large quantities of cantaloupe regularly since cats are obligate carnivores and do not require fruit as a part of a balanced diet. Too much cantaloupe could lead to vomiting and/or diarrhea.

Can a house cat eat canned salmon thats not specifically for cats?
A small amount of the canned salmon meat should not cause any issues. However, you should make sure there are no bone pieces in the food. Also monitor Katrina for any vomiting of diarrhea as sometimes a change to a cats diet can cause GI upset. If Katrina typically has a sensitive stomach then I would avoid giving her any canned salmon. And please remember the majority of Katrina's diet should be a well balanced cat food (canned cat food is preferable to dry). Thanks for using Boop by Petco!

Is it okay to feed my cat "people" food?
People food is just that – food for people. Cats are obligate carnivores, and as such, have a delicate balance of protein, carbohydrates, fat, and vitamins and minerals that must be maintained. Cats should eat a balanced high quality diet in order to meet all of their nutritional needs. Unbalanced diets with vitamin/mineral imbalances risk a variety of health problems. Home cooked diets are not as commonly recommended, but are preferred by some cats and pet owners. If you opt to go down this road, a carefully crafted recipe by a specialist in veterinary nutrition should be used with proper vitamin and mineral supplementation. Even with a commercial diet, occasional treats of boiled white meat chicken, turkey, salmon, or tuna can be perfectly fine in small quantities.

Hi, thanks for using Boop by Petco! Cats and dogs are actually lactose intolerant and dairy products can cause tummy upset consisting of vomiting and/or diarrhea. If Tilly tolerates yogurt just give it in moderation. I hope this helps!

Thanks for using Boop by Petco! This may cause gastrointestinal upset or she may be fine depending on the amount eaten and how well tolerated it is. Watch her closely for signs of gastrointestinal upset such as vomiting inappetence, nausea, and/or vomiting. If any of these are observed, have her evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Otherwise, she may be fine. Best of luck!
