My dog's facial cyst keeps coming back and growing. Should I worry?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Yorkshire Terrier | Female | spayed | 10 years and 7 months old | 3.6 lbs

Bella has pea size lump on side of face near ear. We have had it checked twice by vet. Each time they say they think it is a cyst and when they go to do fine needle aspirate, it drains clear liquid and kind of “pops” which confirmed to them it is a cyst. The vet I believe has said it will probably come back. It appears it is back and is slightly larger than previously. Should I be concerned? Can they get larger and why does it keep coming back after drained?

The cyst is likely what we call a fluid filled cyst. It is a benign sac of fluid. The fluid is produced by the cells lining the sac, so even when we drain the fluid, those cells will create more fluid and the cyst will refill. They can grow slowly over time, but generally they will stay fairly small. If Bella is under anesthesia for another reason (such as a dental cleaning), you may discuss having the cyst surgically removed with your veterinarian. I hope that was helpful and answered your questions. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
