Why does my older dog keep sleeping in the visiting puppy's bed?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Yorkshire Terrier | Male | unneutered | 2 years and 5 months old | 7 lbs

I’m taking care of a 10 month old puppy for a week in my house with my other 3 yorkies, this puppy is actually Anakin’s son. Last night, I was putting Anakin on the floor and by mistake I placed him in his son’s bed. Because of this, he went to sleep on this bed that doesn’t belong to him. I got him out and placed Milo in his bed, and eventually each stayed in their space. But when I woke up I found Anakin in Milo’s bed. What does it mean, and how do I fix it? Thank you.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! If all the dogs are tolerating sharing of the beds I don't think there is much to do or read in to. Since Milo doesn't normally live with you he probably isn't possessive of this bed and he is young at 10 months. Anakin must like the bed. If it bothers you then I would keep removing Anakin from Milo's bed and try to keep each dog in their respective places but it may be a losing battled unless you physically separate the dogs at night in different rooms. I wish you the best!
