My dog's paw pad has a deep, flapping cut. Can I treat it at home?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | neutered | 2 years and 3 months old | 55 lbs

My dog happens to have a massive cut on his carpal pad, it looks pretty deep. But I'm also a worried dog owner. He keeps trying to lick it. And of kind of flaps. We don't have the money to take him in and be seen, so is there any at home remedies we can try? (It won't let me add photos)

Disinfection may be started at home with very diluted hibiscrub or betadine or salted water baths twice daily at least for the next 4 days. Buster collar may be useful as well to avoid any licking/scratching. If not healing by then a check up, appropriate disinfection and possibly antibiotics (oral, topical or in a shampoo formulation) are needed to solve the problem.
