How to stop my dog from biting his leg wound through the cone?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Tibetan Terrier | Male | neutered | 7 years and 3 months old | 29 lbs

My dog has a weird injury on his leg. We were at the vets and the vet gave him antibiotics and new I am giving him 1/4 of augmetin twice a day. The original wound was starting to get better but then he started biting his leg again (he managed to bite through the Elizabethan collar) and now he is creating a new wound. How do I make him stop biting it? I started walking him more than before because the vet suggested it was because of boredom. I can't be with him all the time and he'll hurt himself

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Hanibal! It sounds like the vet is treating for a skin infection but Hanibal is very itchy! I would call your Vet and tell them how itchy he is and ask to have medication prescribed. Either a steroid taper or apoquel. Be sure they have kept mites in mind for his skin condition. Dogs do not tear up their skin out of boredom. I wish Hanibal the best!
