Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Female | spayed | 4 years and 8 months old | 70 lbs
My dog is very itchy. No fleas, we use a spot on monthly. I just went back to the food she had before as we recently changed it and we are trying to ease the itchiness. I've just bathed her in soothing dog shampoo and noticed she has lucked off some of her coating at the base of her tail. What can I do to help her?

I do like the name Nela. It is quite unusual and unique. When dogs her age have problems with itching, we as veterinarians try to put the clothes together as to what is causing the itching. We determined it by the location of the itching, the hair loss associated, etc. I do like the idea of you feeding her old food instead of the new ones just to see if there is a food allergy associated with the new food. You did not mention what type of flea preventative you are using but make sure that you are giving one that is a prescription strength from a veterinary clinic every single month of the year. No exceptions. Another idea you could do right now would be to wipe her down with a wet washcloth every morning and every night for the next week to see if that helps her itchiness also. Sometimes pollens and allergens can collect on their coat and cause itchiness. If your dog is still itching in a weeks time after making these changes, you need to have a veterinarian perform a physical examination to check for some of the diseases that causes her clinical signs. These diseases are scabies mange, environmental allergies, food allergies, flea bite dermatitis, and bacterial or fungal dermatitis. They will be able to run tests at their clinic that will help them make a diagnosis and start you on correct and effective medications. I urge you to not try anymore over the counter foods, shampoos, supplements, etc. after the seven days and rather seek the advice of a veterinarian. I hope this has helped. Have a great day.
