Why is my cat pooping blood and sticky mucus outside her litter box?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Turkish Van | Female | spayed | 5 years and 10 months old | 7.05 lbs

My cat popped on the sheets instead of her litter box. This is completely unlike her. I realizesed there were smears of blood along with the semi solid poop. At another spot there seemed to be a pool of transparent sticky liquid, which I think might either be mucus along with blood. please guide me.

If there was blood in her stool I recommend taking Biscuit to a veterinarian and having a stool sample checked to make sure she doesn't have intestinal parasites. The sticky liquid you saw may be her anal glands being expressed. Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.

Blood in the stools can have a variety of causes, and in a cat that goes outside, intestinal parasites would be my first guess. You can try an OTC cat dewormer from the pet store. If you notice additional bloody stools (you may have to keep Bella inside with a litter box for a few days to monitor) or if her appetite is decreased or she develops other symptoms, she should definitely get examined by a vet.
