My cat got oil on her back. When should I take her to the vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

My cat came in with what smelled like oil on her back between the shoulder blades. It was on there for a few hours before I smelled it and realized what it was. I wet a cloth and added dawn dish soap and tried to rub off what I could. I don’t think she ingested any as it was too far up her back. Should I take her to the vet? Not sure if it penetrated her skin or not.

I would make sure that you got all the oil and rinse well after washing. She was probably sitting underneath a car and got oily that way. I would observe her for a day and if she shows no sign of illness there is no need to take her to a vet.
