Pet's info: Dog | Dachshund | Male | 11 years and 6 months old | 12 lbs
My dachshund Abel appears to be experiencing discomfort in his left hip or lower back. It began last night after my husband attempted to pick him up. He began yelping immediately and hasn't wanted to move since. Just before this he was perfectly fine and walking on his own. He winces if you try and pick him up and does not want to put pressure on it when attempting to walking. Instead he holds his hind leg up and tail curled under. Any advice before we take him to the vet? Thank you!

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Abel! Due to his breed, back issues are very likely which is usually due to intervertebral disk disease. The holding up of one leg in that situation is due to sciatic pain. Other causes are a muscle strain or sprain, Lyme disease, torn ACL, loose knee cap or due to his age a bone tumor. I would have him seen Monday as soon as possible and on emergency if he is very painful or stops using the other leg. I wish Abel the best!
