My dog ate grapes and cherries, straining to poop. What should I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Saluki | Male | neutered | 5 years and 8 months old | 48 lbs

My do has eaten about 5 cherries and a bunch of grapes. He is straining to pass something but only little loose poo comes out and a lot of times nothing. He's eating okay and fine in himself and his gums are still pink. I've gave him a carrot but nothing since teatime last night.

I would suggest to provide his normal food and monitor closely. If he continue to try to defecate without result he might be constipated. I would also recommend to have a blood test done to check the kidney function. Unfortunately grapes are toxic for dog and can cause damage to the kidneys. Therefore I recommend to see your veterinarian asap to address both issues. Please post again on the forum if you would like to discuss it further. I hope my answer was helpful.
