How to help my grieving cat eat and gain weight after a loss?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Female | unspayed | 12 years and 3 months old | 7 lbs

I recently put my male cat down a month ago and I have a female cat that grew up with my male cat and since I put him down she has stopped eating dry for and has lost a bit of weight. Sometimes she won't eat the wet food either. How can I get her to put more weight on and eat more?

Animals often grieve like people. Usually after several weeks or a month or two they adjust and get back to normal. I would spend more time brushing, petting and playing with her, and feed wet food and treats if needed to get her eating better again. When they are loved and engaged they usually are more relaxed and then that improves the eating and appetite.
