My dog throws up food after eating fast. Is it serious?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | 1 year and 6 months old | 12 lbs

Pepper just regurgitated her kibble that she ate about 1.5 hours ago. There was no trigger, it just happened. She has done this maybe once in the past but it is not common. Sometimes she will drink water quickly and then immediately spit it back up. She does gobble her food very quickly as well, we got her a special bowl to slow her down and she still mastered that although it helps some. Could she have a serious issue or does this happen sometimes in dogs that eat/drink quickly?

This is definitely something that can occur as a result of how fast food and water are ingested. The maze dog food bowls work great or the bowls that only dispense a small amount of food at a time. You can try and elevate the food bowl and see if this helps. If the episodes become more frequent then I would recommend having a veterinarian take a look at Pepper and consider switching to a different food. I hope this helps! Please let me know if you have any other questions or concerns and I would be more than happy to help you further.
