My cat has a gash, acts strange. Where can I find affordable vet care?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | unspayed | 1 year and 4 months old | 10 lbs

My outside cat came home after 5 days in the heat with a huge gash on her cheek. She’s acting strange, lethargic, listless, aggressive and hiding. She’s still eating, drinking and toileting. What could be wrong and what can I do to help her. Also I can’t afford an expensive vet is there anywhere that would treat her inexpensively?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Lucy! Without examining her or seeing a picture of the wound it is hard to say. The wound alone can be painful or infected causing her to be lethargic, listless and strange. She could have gotten in to a fight, fell from a high height or even been hit by a car. The best thing for her is to be examined. I would ask your neighbors what vet they use that are inexpensive or call your local SPCA to see if they have a low cost veterinary clinic. Though it is a weekend and the SPCA clinics my not be open. I wish you the best!
