Is it safe to take my cat camping and leave her in a tent?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Female | spayed | 1 year and 6 months old | 9 lbs

Can I bring my cat camping? She is OK with car rides and being in her carrier. She is leash trained. I want to know if I can leave her in the tent when I go hiking/swimming/other activities, with proper ventilation, food, water, and litter.

Hello and thank you for reaching out to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. I would hesitate to bring Muffin camping with you. Especially if it is hot out, the temperature inside of a tent could become dangerously hot and cause heat stroke, which can be fatal. Additionally, I would be nervous about leaving her in a tent alone because she could potentially attract wildlife that may attack her while she’s unsupervised. She may also run away if she gets out of the tent because she is unfamiliar with the surroundings. If she could be supervised at all times, I think she could be OK. I hope this is helpful!
