My dog has a lump after vaccine. Is it a false positive for sarcoma?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Male | neutered | 7 years and 7 months old | 70 lbs

7 yr lab cross had shots 2 weeks ago. Developed a lump at injection site 1 week later. Had it aspirated, pathology came back as sarcoma. Took dog to new vet and they state it is merely an adverse vaccine reaction due to the fact that it has decreased in size from 2 cm to 4mm. They said it was a false positive for sarcoma. Is this possible? To have sarcoma cells come back but there actually is no cancer?

I am sorry to hear about Knox. I would ask for a second opinion on the original aspirate. If it was not sent to a pathologist, it should be sent for a pathology review. If a pathologist did review the original slide, your vet can request that the slide be reviewed again by another pathologist. If the area is still suspect or you are concerned, you can have the mass removed and have a biopsy done to confirm the diagnosis.
