My dog has diarrhea with blood. What could cause it and is it serious?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Male | neutered | 1 year and 5 months old | 70 lbs

I have a 1 1/2 year old German Shepard/husky mix. Today my girlfriend went hiking wit him and he stopped to use the potty and she said she saw diarreah and specks of blood. He also had diarrhea a few days earlier but no blood. She took him to the vet and they took his temp and everything and took a stool sample and are sending it for a O&P with giardia. I wish I was there to ask questions cause I’m concerned about HGE cause the prior diarrhea and he also drinks A lOt of water. What should I do

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Some fresh blood in the stool is actually more consistent with a simple colitis (usually due to stress, excitement, new food or treats). In general, HGE is uncommon in larger breed dogs. Dogs with HGE tend to be pretty sick too: serious lethargy, loss of appetite, etc. If Elliot is eating and drinking well and has a normal attitude, HGE is extremely unlikely. Best of luck to you and Elliot!
