Is Safe Guard safe for pregnant dogs? How often should I deworm her?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Border Collie | Female | unspayed | 9 years and 2 months old | 25 lbs

I have pregnant border collie and am wanting to worm her. I bought Safe Guard, the packaging says it is safe to use on pregnant dogs; however, I would like a second opinion. Is this a safe medication? How often should I worm her during / after the pregnancy?

Yes, Safeguard is a safe wormer for pregnant dogs. Since your dog is 9 years old, she is likely not to have a heavy worm burden. An ideal worming regime is: Bitches should be wormed before mating, after the first 45 days of pregnancy and after giving birth. They should then be wormed with their pups at 2, 5 and 8 weeks and after weaning.
