Pet's info: Dog | Labrador Retriever | Male | unneutered | 10 years and 2 months old | 70 lbs

Hi. I'm afraid I've made a stupid mistake w my 10-y-o arthritic labrador. He's been very stiff, slow and lethargic the last few days. Appt. with vet next wk. An orthopedic surgeon friend recommended I give him 200 mg of ibuprofen 3x a day. Just gave him 200 mg; then read online that any amount of ibuprofen for dogs can be poisonous. How worried should I be??

Hi there and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to address your concern. The dose at which Jack received should not cause any major problems. The low end of the toxic dose range is 50mg/kg, which is about 1500mg. He should be fine but if you begin to notice signs of vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy or inappetance then I would recommend having a veterinarian take a look at him so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. I hope this helps. Please let me know if you have any other questions or concerns and I would be more than happy to help you further. For future, if you want to help Jack out with relieving pain, I would discuss options with your veterinarian that are much safer.
