How do I train my cat that jumps, scratches, and won't be held?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Female | spayed | 1 year and 4 months old

I am frustrated and at a point of giving up Catori she won’t listen to me I’ve had to yell at her because she thinks I’m playing she will look at you and still jump on the stove or scratch the wall or won’t go back down to her room any suggestions on how to get her to listen also she won’t let me hold her or sit still long enough for you to brush or even pet her . Does age have to do with this we got her when she was 8 months so maybe whoever had her before has something to do with her behavior?

This is typical normal cat behavior. She will calm down as she gets older. Cats are not dogs and they pretty much do what they want. Training a cat is difficult and takes a lot of patience. You can use a Scat Mat to teach her not to jump on the counters. They sell them at Petco. If you sit calmly she may come to you for affection when she wants. Trying to force a cat to do something will just cause them to resist. Be patient and ignore her and she’ll probably seek you out. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to help you care for Catori.
