My cat had intestinal surgery 5 days ago. Can he eat kibble?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Russian Blue | Male | neutered | 9 months and 7 days old | 9 lbs

My cat had intestinal surgery 5days ago on 7/1, after eating string. He’s been on soft A/D catfood thus far BUT today he is refusing to eat it. He is interested in his regular diet of hard kibble. Is it too soon to continue regular diet? Thanks!

I hope Jones is feeling much better. String and cats just don’t mix, do they? In my experience, it has been long enough to start your regular food without any problem. You may experience some diarrhea due to a sudden dietary change again, however. But I will say that I would make absolutely certain with your regular veterinarian that performed the surgery, that this would be OK to do so before actually switching back to your regular food. I hope I have helped you. Thank you very much for your question.
