My epileptic dog is stressed by storms. Why is his behavior changing?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Pomeranian | Male | unneutered | 6 years and 1 month old | 16 lbs

My epileptic dog the past few days has been acting a little weird. There have been fireworks and thunderstorms lately which caused him a lot of stress and anxiety, and I'm concerned that with certain foods, like peanut butter, he won't eat unless it's off my finger. He eats his regular food just fine, so I'm not concerned with that, but the change in personality is startling to me. He's a very picky dog and a slow eater and will normally reject food at first depending on the type.

I am sorry to hear about Chewie. The storms and fireworks can definitely cause extreme anxiety in some pets. I would recommend discussing with your vet if there is a prescription medication they feel is appropriate for him knowing his medical history to see if this helps if the storms are still ongoing. You can also try an Adaptil collar (a calming pheremone product), a Thundershirt (compression vest for anxiety) and a calming supplement like Zylkene or Composure, all available online or sometimes at pet stores or vet offices. If the strange behavior continues then an exam is recommended.
