My cat's eye is runny and she's losing hair. Is it an infection?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Female | spayed | 10 years and 11 months old | 14 lbs

My cat had some clear, runny gunk coming out of her left eye. I cleaned her up and now noticed the hair in that area is gone. She seems to be fine but I am concerned there could be an infection. Any advice?

Thanks for using PetCoach. If AnnaBelle has continuous discharge from her eye she may have an infection. If it continues I recommend a vet visit to see if she needs medication. If she is squinting, rubbing her eye or painful she should be checked. The hairloss is likely just from irritation from the discharge. Some eye inflammation in cats is caused by upper respiratory infections - watch AnnaBelle for signs of sneezing or nasal discharge as well. https://veterinarypartner.vin.com/default.aspx?pid=19239&id=4951824
