Why is my rat suddenly lethargic, aggressive, and not eating?

Rats have a gestation period of 21-23 days. Have her examined by your veterinarian or a vet experienced in treating pocket pets. He or she may be able to confirm pregnancy or diagnose illness or injury. Check her teeth to rule out overgrowth or malocclusion. Either could cause her to go off her food. The antibiotic (Baytril?) may also cause some GI upset.

Based on what you are describing it does sound as if Lucy is very ill. I would recommend either having her rechecked at your veterinarian or asking for a referral to an exotic capitalistic that can perform more specialized tests on small mammals like blood work, x-rays, and ultrasounds. Based on the age of your rat she may have something more serious going on like an internal infection or cancer. In the meantime, try to encourage Lucy to eat as best you can by offering her her favorite foods and/or syringe feeding her some baby food. Differentials are many, from gastrointestinal or respiratory diseases (infection/inflammations) to any disease that can spread systemically (causing lethargy for example) like infection, and anything that can cause pain/discomfort. A check up is needed if the signs last for more than 24hours. These symptoms really concern me. Heart disease, respiratory infections, cancer, and neurological problems are all possible causes of his symptoms. Hello. So sorry to hear the Nemesis is having this issue. Likely she has a uterine infection which can be quite serious. My recommendation is to have her examined by a vet that is used to treating exotic animals/pocket pets. The other option is a bladder infection. Either way she needs to see a vet. Thanks for reaching out about Koochi and including photo (although eye lesions are not evident). Being lethargic is a general sign of illness. Eyes that have turned white can be corneal ulcerations, glaucoma, cataracts, or other conditions. A veterinary visit is recommended to assess and provide a diagnostic/treatment plan. Monitor food and water intake, try to determine is Koochi can see. When out of cage, observe if she can avoid walking into things. Hand feed/water if needed. Good luck.

it does not mean she is pregnant, rats can sometimes be aggressive to each other without any good reason. pregnancy in rats lasts up to 24 days, you will have to wait until then to find out if she was pregnant (if she lives with a male, she probably is).

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Jade. I recommend that she sees a veterinarian. She could have a developed a condition known as aspiration pneumonia. This is an infection in the lungs that occurs secondary to choking on food. Her veterinarian will examine her and discuss diagnostic and treatment options. I hope this information helps!
