Can my anxious senior dog take CBD with Tramadol for arthritis?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Miniature Schnauzer | Male | neutered | 16 years old | 15 lbs

My dog is on 1 galliprant per day and 25 mg tramadol every 12 hours for Arthritis in his leg. He's 16 years old and becoming very anxious with grooming and travel. He won't let anyone touch his face. I want to try CBD oil. Can I continue the tramadol or should I stop it? Would I need to wean him off of it? He has also developed a head tilting problem.

Hi there. I'm sorry to hear about Peetie's issues. CBD oil is still very much in the experimental stages in veterinary patients, so we do not have any reliable information yet about effective dosage ranges, safety, or possible drug interactions. We hope that more studies on this will be forthcoming in the next few years - but for now, if you choose to use it, be aware that you are doing so at your own risk as we do not know whether it is safe to use with other meds. If you want to try something else for his anxiety issues that we know is safe, I would suggest Zylkene or Composure - these are natural calming supplements that can be purchased over the counter or ordered online without a prescription. You could also talk to your veterinarian about prescription anti-anxiety medication such as alprazolam or trazodone, if Peetie's anxiety is severe.
