Why is my dog dragging her back legs and crying after an incident?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Lhasa Apso | Female | spayed | 20 lbs

My dog got into it with my cat. When I got to my dog she was on her back and both hind legs were crossed and she was crying and bit me. It’s been about 3 hours and she is not whining as much when o move her legs she doesn’t whine. When she try’s to walk somewhere she only uses her two front legs and drags the bottom on her body on the floor. I didn’t find any wounds or anything. We just moved and we no longer have our other dog that she is very used to. So I do think she is scared and stressed

This sounds like she may have injured her back which is very serious and needs immediate veterinary attention. If she isn’t using her rear legs this may be temporary or if the nerves have been damaged she could become permanently paralyzed. Please take her in the treatment right away. They will give medication for the pain and to reduce the inflammation around the nerves. Dogs can rupture a disc in their back and may need surgery to relieve the pressure so they can walk again. It’s best to get an exam to determine the cause of her pain and lack of walking in the rear legs. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to help you care for Tootie.
