Why is my dog still scared of fireworks days after they stopped?

Hello. Chester is still in rare form since July 3rd when people starting setting off fireworks. They haven't set anything off all day today and when I got home from work he is still acting very scared. I don't recall him doing this last year for an extended period of time the day after the 4th and am wondering if this is becoming habit and if so, how can I help him through this? I have an anxiety collar on him which hasnt helped and a thunder jacket. Thank you. Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Male | neutered | 3 years and 4 months old | 65 lbs

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. It sounds like Chester’s noise phobia has worsened with each passing year (which is very common). I’d recommend getting your vet involved. He or she can help you determine if Chester needs long-term anxiety medication or some some to have on hand for times of known fireworks. Do keep up with the collar and the thunder jacket though both help some. (I don’t know how many times he’s worn the jacket but the latest study I heard about said that is has its biggest effect after the 5th wear during a storm/firework episode).
