My dog got Centrine for stomach gurgling. What does it do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Dachshund miniature | Male | neutered | 1 year and 8 months old | 15 lbs

What exactly is Centrine supposed to do? My dog has been ill because he got into something he shouldn't have, but there's no obstruction. He keeps some food down, keeps water down, has appetite, is still playful. Dr. heard lots of gurgling in the stomach/gut area so he was given a shot of Centrine and Ampicillin. He did burp with very little spit up about 2 hours after the injection. Thoughts?

Regarding Centrine specifically, it is supposed to reduce GI spasms and decrease stomach acid production. Here is a good summary on the drug: https://www.petcoach.co/article/aminopentamide-centrine/

I have never used this drug, and my reading tells me it's rarely used in veterinary medicine. It's supposed to reduct GI spasms and also the production of acid by glands in the stomach, however my preference is always to do diagnostic testing to try to determine what is causing these symptoms. If Milo is vomiting, I recommend having some tests done to try to figure out why, such as blood work and x-rays. He could have a blockage in the stomach or intestines, have ingested something toxic or spoiled, or he could have intestinal parasites. I would consider checking with another vet in your area who is able to perform these tests.
