How to prevent heat stroke in my cat in a hot apartment with no AC?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 11 months and 4 days old | 13 lbs

We're expecting our first heat wave tomorrow (over 100 degrees). Our apartment is on the second floor and we have no air conditioning. It's also noticeably warmer inside than outside. He's a short-haired tabby. What can I do to make sure Billy stays cool? Should I worry about him getting heat stroke?

Hello! That is very hot! You are right to be concerned for heat stroke. Make sure that he will have access to lots of fresh water- leaving a few bowls out with ice cubes in the morning may be a good idea. You can also make a cheap "air conditioner" with a fan and an ice pack that may help keep the area cool. Dark curtains may also help keep the apartment cooler throughout the day. I hope this is helpful! Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach!
