Do cats need all vaccines every year? Is my vet's plan normal?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 1 year and 9 months old

Good day! My vet didn't give my cat his usual vaccine and gave him the leukemia one instead, and told to come back in 3 weeks to give him the tricat one. However, he skipped it and gave him the one after it. Is it necessary for him to get each vaccine like the previous year or is this normal? Thank you very much!

We are finding that some vaccines are effective for 3 years or longer. I'm not sure what vaccine you mean by "the one after it," but if your vet's plan was to skip the "tricat" vaccine altogether this year, that may be their normal recommendation. However, I would strongly recommend you discuss this with your veterinarian or with one of his assistants; they can explain their vaccine protocol to you. Again, it is true that we don't need to give every vaccine every year. I hope that answers your question! Thank you for asking Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach!
