Puppy choked on formula, breathing issues. More antibiotics?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | unneutered | 9 days old | 0.406 lbs

Hx: omphalitis, 3 days ago. Abscess drained and he got 6 doses of Ampicillin (3 IV + 3 subcutaneous injections until this morning) and 3 doses of ceftriaxone IV. Today he aspirated some formula. At first he had problems breathing but then I slung him for a while, patted and massaged his back and kinda tried the Heimlich maneuver. He’s sleeping and seems better. I wanted to see if the amount of aspiration is not much, given he was on ABs until today, will he need more prophylactic antibiotics?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor baby! Namak has been through a lot already. I am hoping the aspiration was just through the nasal cavity and wasn't an aspiration to the lungs. If it was nasal I am sure he will be fine as even normal puppies can occasionally do this when bottle fed. I would recommend continuing antibiotics though. Contact your vet and get more if they agree. Good luck!
