Dog vomiting & diarrhea after Trazodone for fireworks. Is it serious?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Hi, my dog has been prescribed Trazodone and we gave her only half of a pill to see how it would work last night (night before Fourth of July). It’s now the Fourth of July and fireworks have been non stop for the past few days, which is why we got her the medicine. When the medicine wore off she threw up but then she seemed on for the rest of the day until fireworks started and she began to throw up and have diarrhea. She seems ok now that the fireworks have stopped but should I be worried?

Trazodone can cause vomiting and diarrhea, but these signs would typically be seen shortly after the pill was given. Some dogs will develop diarrhea and even vomiting secondary to stress so it’s possible that the fireworks were the trigger. As long as the diarrhea has resolved and you’re not seeing any more vomiting you can probably just continue to monitor her, but otherwise you should see your vet. You also may want to ask about a different sedative for the future.
