My kitten's spay tattoo is peeling. Is it infected or healing?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Female | spayed | 2 months and 13 days old | 10 lbs

My kitten was spayed a week ago and the vet etched a tattoo into her skin so that if she ever got lost the people that found her would know she's already spayed. The tattoo seemed to be fine the first 6 days but now its seems to be peeling off. I'm worried about whether it's infected or if it just wasn't etched into her skin properly. I would appreciate some feedback. Thank you!

Hello! The peeling a week afterwards sounds like a normal part of the healing process for a tattoo. As long as it is not very red, swollen, or having any discharge, I would not worry about it being infected. I hope this is helpful! Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach!
