Newborn kitten clicking when feeding, possible breathing problem?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

I have a farrell orphan kitten who I’m trying to feed. But he keeps opening his mouth very wide and his mouth makes a small clicking noise, like his lungs may have fluid in them. We are taking him to the vet but he needs food now! What should I do? He is less than 14 days and may not have had food for almost 24 hours

If you are completely unable to feed him and it has been 24 hours since he has eaten, I would seek emergency care ASAP. There may be a functional issue or deformity that is preventing him from being able to eat properly which may need surgical correction or IV fluids/feeding tubes to bypass so he can get the nutrition he needs. Please try to seek care immediately at your vet or a local ER clinic, especially if he cannot eat at all or seems in distress.
