What is this black spot on my dog's leg? Is a black skin tag normal?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 4 years and 6 months old | 20 lbs

Conner has a black tick like place that has come up on his leg. It's not a tick. I've researched and read it could be a skin tag. My worry is because it's black. It doesn't appear to be growing. Thank you!!

Skin tags may be benign or malignant. You would need to have Conner physically examined by your veterinarian for a definitive diagnosis. A fine needle aspirate can be done in the clinic to collect samples for pathology. Alternatively, a punch biopsy can be done under a local anesthetic to remove the tag completely. It can then be sent out for analysis. Until then monitor it for rapid change or growth. See your veterinarian if it causes discomfort or restricts movement.
