My dog has a runny nose, cough, and is tired. Allergies or sick?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Watson has had a very runny nose and occasionally sneezing and “coughing” (sounds like phlegm or weird breathing to clear his throat). I’m not sure if it’s allergies or more? We’ve given him Benadryl which helps a little. He’s been more lethargic but that might be due to all day daycare yesterday which usually wears him out. We’ll monitor him more tonight and tomorrow but do you think this is something we should come in for? Or anything elaw we should do?

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Watson. I am concerned that he may have an upper respiratory tract infection based on the signs you have described and the fact that he goes to doggy daycare. It is common for respiratory infections to occur when there are lots of dogs playing together in one place. He will need to see his veterinarian as he may require antibiotic treatment. I hope this information helps!
