Is my senior dog dying? She's unresponsive, not eating, and weak.

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | spayed | 55 lbs

Is my dog dying? I can’t make it to the vet ASAP so I’m asking here. She’s almost 17, and hasn’t been able to walk for a few years. Just yesterday, she suddenly stopped eating, and became very lethargic. Her gums are pale, she’s only barely responsive, and won’t even open her mouth. Last night she also had many bowel movements and diarrhea that only stopped today. That being said, her breathing is fast strained, like she’s panting with her mouth shut. Her heartbeat is also very weak.

Yes, a weak heart beat, pale gums, laboured breathing and unresponsive behavior are all indicators of a fatal crisis and impending death. Euthanasia should be considered when she is unwilling or unable to eat or drink
