Why is my senior dog peeing blood, but vet tests show nothing wrong?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | neutered | 12 years old | 75 lbs

My dog is 12 years old. Is peeing blood, we had an ultrasound and xray as well as a urinalysis. They are not showing anything. Any idea what it could be that wouldnt show on these tests? It seems odd that nothing would show up when its clear he is peeing blood

There are many possible reasons for blood or pigment in the urine and referral to a specilialist may be necessary if no obvious cause has shown up so far. Liver and muscle disease can cause discolouration of the urine, kidney, prostate and bladder disease or penile trauma can cause bleeding into the urinary tract. I would recommend submitting a urine sample to a specialist laboratory and also a full blood panel to identify any medical factors also
