Why is my dog not moving, shivering, won't eat, and crying in pain?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Bichon Frise | Male | neutered | 16 lbs

My dog is a 7 year old Bichon Frisé. He started acting odd last night when he would just stand in place and not move at all. This morning he won't eat or drink and still won't move, just very occasionally. For example, when taking him out this morning he walked to the driveway and stopped moving. He didn't pee or poop this morning, and he has been shivering on and off. When trying to pick him up he cried in pain so I have to be very careful.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Gage! I would worry that Gage has hurt his back or neck. This is how they tend to act. They also don’t jump up in furniture like normal and avoid the stairs. They cry when touched, picked up or move. I would take him in to your vet today before the holiday for an exam. I treat neck and back pain with anti-inflammatories, muscle relaxants and pain medications. I wish Gage a speedy recovery!
