My dog's skin is dry and flaky after reducing Apoquel. What helps?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Scottish Terrier | Male | neutered | 5 years and 2 months old | 23 lbs

My 5 yr old Scottie has been on allergy shots & 5.4 Apoquel since 3-4 mos old. We are trying to get him off Apoquel since he has done well. I have been giving 1/2 tablet / day for approx 2 mos and his skin is very dry, flaky now which causes him to scratch. Mostly belly area but under arms is a little scaly although Hydrocortisone cream & Aloe based gel has helped. Anything I can use to help with the dry, flaky skin? Oatmeal shampoo doesn't seem to help. Been using Zymox shampoo/conditioner.

The itching, scaling and dry skin is an indication that he likely requires long term, regular dose apoquel - these are all signs of allergic skin disease and if the symptoms have only reappeared as you have reduced the apoquel you should discuss returning to the previously prescribed dose with your vet. An omega fatty acid supplement such as viacutan is very helpful as a natural antiinflammatory and moisturiser for all dogs but especially those with allergic skin disease

With a history of allergies that are currently being treated, what I am seeing in the photo is likely due to the allergies. Many times I will see skin rash formation with allergy cases. It is important to remember that apoquel does not treat allergies it alleviates the itching by blocking the itch receptors in the body. I would suggest adding an additional allergy treatments to alleviate symptoms like this. I would suggest using a shampoo such as Douxo PS calm shampoo and bathe twice weekly until resolved. I would also recommend starting welactin omega-3 fish oil and essential 6 Spot On By dermoscent. I would also recommend using a spray called malacetic conditioning spray and apply to the area until resolved.

Hi there and thank you for using pet coach to address your concern. Apoquel is a good drug to help with itching but it will not treat the cause of the itching. What you are seeing could be a skin infection. I would recommend a course of an oral antibiotic and the below recommended products that can be found online or at your local pet store. You will need to get the antibiotic prescribed through your veterinarian. I hope this helps! Please let me know if you have any other questions or concerns. 1. Welactin omega 3 fish oil 2. Essential 6 spot on by dermoscent 3. Douxo PS calm shampoo and bathe twice weekly until the infection is resolved 4. Malacetic conditioning spray and apply to the area until resolved
