What can I use to clean my dog's eye boogers safely at home?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Husky | Male | neutered | 6 months and 25 days old | 40 lbs

Hi, I have noticed that my pups right eye has formed eye boogers significantly more than the other eye last two days. I went to an animal hospital for some other reason (he got attacked by another dog at a dog park and limping) and mentioned that to my vet but he told me to wait. I want to take the precaution and wash his eyes with proper products. What could be used?

If you just need to remove the eye discharge, you can put warm water on a cotton ball and gently wipe the inside corner of the eye. If the discharge quickly returns or you notice discharge in the eye as well, you can use any sterile saline eye wash made for humans. If the discharge is not resolving after a couple of day or is getting worse at any point, then I would have your veterinarian recheck the eye and determine if any medication is needed to resolve the problem. Good luck! I hope that was helpful. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
