My dog's eye is swollen with discharge and head tilt. Is it an emergency?

Hello. My dog woke up this morning with a swollen eye which appears to be the whites of his eye. There is mucus like discharge. He also has been opening his mouth and tilting his head to the opposite side from the eye. I’m hoping to understand if this can wait until the morning or if it is an emergency. Thanks.

Thank you for posting the picture it is really helpful. What I see in the picture is called chemosis, or swelling of the conjunctiva of the eye. Most of the time this is not an emergency and is associated with allergies or other inflammation. However, in very rare cases it can indicate low protein levels of the blood which can be critical. I would highly encourage you to have him evaluated by your veterinarian soon. Best of luck and I hope he improves soon. Thank you for using Pet Coach.
