Is my cat's sneezing contagious, or linked to other cat's kidney failure?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 8 years and 3 months old | 8 lbs

My cat was just diagnosed with kidney failure and given 6 months to live. Now my other cat has become lethargic and is sneezing all the time. She has watery eyes. Is this because the other cat has kidney failure. Was kidney failure the wrong diagnoses for my older cat and its something contagious?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Kidney failure isn't contagious and is relatively easy to diagnose on blood work based on elevated BUN, creatinine and sometimes phosphorus. I doubt it was diagnosed by mistake. Your other cat sounds like she has an upper respiratory tract infection. It tends to be viral usually in cats but we worry about secondary bacterial infections. It usually runs it's course but if she isn't eating then she should see your Vet. i wish you the best with both cats!
