Help! My dog is obsessed with our new kitten. How do I calm her?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | 2 years and 1 month old | 45 lbs

I have a 2 year old female dog, she's a mix of Border Collie, Blue Heeler, Rottweiler and Lab. She's always chased cats, but she loves them, has never hurt them. We have a 2 month old kitten in the house now and she's obsessed. She's not calm, she's still very much a puppy. I don't think she would hurt the kitten on purpose but I'm still worried she could. She stares intently when near it & whines, tries to grab it with mouth and paws, when she can she licks it. Is there a way to calm her?

There is no specific answer for this question because every dog responds differently to cats. If you truly think your dog is just interested in cats and does not want to hurt her, then allow them time to interact with each other (under supervision of course) as often as you can. The more Phoebe is around the kitten the more used to her she will become.
