What's this red scabbed patch on my dog's leg? Does he need a vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | neutered | 45 lbs

My dog just recently developed this red scabbed patch on his leg. It's right above his carpal pad about a quarter in size. It hasn't changed much at all since we first noticed it a few days ago. Any ideas on what it could be and if he needs to be taken in for treatment?

This presentation could be due to a trauma or localized spot of skin infection (likely to be caused by bacteria). A check up, appropriate disinfection and possibly antibiotics (oral, topical or in a shampoo formulation) are needed to solve the problem. Disinfection may be started at home with very diluted hibiscrub or betadine or salted water baths. Buster collar may be useful as well to avoid any licking. It does seem infected and the best thing to do is clean it like you have already. It maybe from a bite and he has scratched it to make it worse. Since you already cleaned it, apply neosporin to keep the scab from forming and help heal it. If it is not better in a a day or so then I would have your vet checked it
