How can I get prescription food for my diabetic cat moving to the US?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Devon Rex | Female | spayed | 9 lbs

Hello, i'm bringing my cat to the states. She has diabeties and weight problems. I want to order special royal canon or hills food for her, but it won't let me, because i don't have a prescription from a local doctor. Will a foreign prescription work? Or how can i purchase the food? It's really important for her health

Hello and thank you for your question. I am so sorry to hear that you are having problems getting the care you need for Bianca. As I see it, you only have two options. First, as soon as you touch down in the states, I would make it a priority to schedule an appointment with a local veterinarian so that they can prescribe or sell you the food and medications you need. Second, you could also ask your previous doctor to contact The veterinary clinic you intend to use in the United States and have them fax the medical records. The new veterinarian in the United States will see the medical records and be able to continue The treatment and food that you had been giving. You could try this idea and it may work. But honestly, many veterinarians feel on comfortable prescribing anything without first doing a complete physical examination on your cat. I hope this helps and I thank you very much for being a wonderful animal advocate
