My senior Boxer has new growths, one bleeds. Should I worry?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Boxer | Female | spayed | 10 years and 7 months old | 38 lbs

In the past few months, my 10-year-old boxer mix has sprouted two growths. She’s never had these before. The first was a few months ago and can be found on her left cheek. It’s round, skin color and has gone up and down in size. The second came out of nowhere on her lower front left leg. That one is black and hangs from the leg. It bleeds. I was able to get a picture of the one on her leg, but not the one on her cheek because of its color and size. Should I be concerned and how can I help her?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! My dog gets these. He has had them on his legs and they would bleed occasionally especially during a bath. They tend to be benign growths. I don;t like your description of the one on the face that increases and decreases in size though. That sounds like the behavior of a mast cell, which boxers tend to get. If it looks like the one in the picture it could increase and decrease in size based on the blood inside the mass. The only way to fix them is to remove them, which is what I did for my dog. Sadly they will develop more over time. I would take Kate to your Vet and have them examine the areas and discuss removal. I wish you and Kate the best!
